Frequently Asked Questions
School Related
How much will training cost me?
Beginning March 1, 2006, our rates will be $85.00 per month per individual for the adult section and $65.00 per month per child for the children's section. Additional familiy member receives a reduced monthly rate with a regularly enrolled member. Currently, the additional family adult enjoys a reduced rate of $45.00 per month in the adult section. The additional family child enjoys a reduced rate of $35.00 per month in the children's section. If you are enrolling with more than two members in a family, be sure to ask about our reduced family rates. Initial enrollment with special promotions may reduce the overall enrollment tuition. Be sure to ask about current promotions.
Will I get injured or hurt when training?
As with any sport, there is the potential for injury. However, you can be assured that our instructors and our training practices have been carefully designed to minimize injury. You may experience occassional bruising during more strenuous training. However, you can be assured that major injuries are extremely rare.
Will I need to sign a contract to enroll at your school?
At this time, we do not require students to sign any enrollment or binding contracts with our school. We believe that everyone has the freedom to try out the martial arts without locking their dollars in with us. You are only expected to pay on a monthly basis.
Do I get to meet Shidoshi Ron Van Clief?
From time to time, Shidoshi Van Clief may appear at our school for special training or seminars. These special engagements are infrequent as Shidoshi Van Clief's schedule is very busy. Being one of the few grand masters to still be alive with their system, it is a unique experience that we encourage any student interested to participate. Shidoshi Van Clief is expected to retire from the martial arts in 2006, however.
What do I need to get started once I enroll?
Once you commit to your training, you will be required to attend class sessions wearing a gi (pronounced "gee" as in guitar). You may purchase a gi from Island Martial Arts. Ask for a standard medium weight karate gi. Each gi will come with a white belt. Be sure to try on your gi before purchasing and request assistance with your white belt sizing. You will also need protective gear such as a sports cup for groin protection. Additional pads are optional and an be purchased at any sporting equipment store. Finally, you will be required to purchase a school patch from us.
Do I need any prior training?
You do not need to have received any prior training to begin with us. We will provide you with all the physical training exercises and conditioning that you will need to be successful.
What can I expect to get out of my training?
There is a wealth of knowledge that you can expect from your training. You can expect physical conditioning that will challenge your stamina and coordination. You can also expect some spiritual guidance relating to the art or Chinese Goju. Each class session is designed to incorporate physical conditioning and basic form techniques. Additional exercises such as specialized self defense techniques, kata, and other martial arts training will be a part of your training routine. Because Chinese Goju is an evolving system that captures what works in other systems, you will be exposed to other style of martial arts such as Aiki, Aikido, Juijitsu, and more.
